Sweeping musical landscapes materialized through contemporary jazz.
Veteran jazz bassist Colin Trusedell’s brand new release, “The Places We’re Taken,” features 7 new original compositions inspired by the twists that life throws at you as well as musical flavors from different regions of the world.
Motivated by a 4-month, 10 country tour as a musical diplomat for the United States, Trusedell’s latest musical offering combines middle eastern sounds with contemporary jazz and features acrobatic solos from JOSIAH JOYCE on guitar, BEN THOMPSON on piano, and TYLER KENNAMER on drums. The album marks a milestone of artistic expression for Trusedell as this is his first album after significant life challenges driven by the pandemic and military life.
This is Trusedell’s eighth release as a bandleader, following his award-winning releases, “The Quarantine Chronicles” (2020), “Without All the Chatter” (2017), “Quartet of Jazz Death Vol. 2” (2016), “Quartet of Jazz Death” (2014) and “Some of My Best Friends Are…Divas” (2013). Trusedell is currently an active-duty U.S. Air Force musician at the USAF Band of Mid America, serving as the Musical Director and group leader for Starlifter, a versatile musical ensemble that tours the world.
TRACK DESCRIPTIONS
CHOICES:
This is the title track off Colin Trusedell's upcoming release, "The Places We're Taken." The title and music reflect all the different “Choices” we make about life decisions. The push, the pull, and the effects of certain choices have ripples that can be felt in the moment and in the future.
KARMA:
“Karma” can be beautiful but also chaotic. This track captures the struggle of wanting karma to happen for you but also the strife of letting go.
SNAKE CHARMER:
We all have these people we come across in life that things just seem to always play in their advantage. No matter how hard you try, you see them constantly succeeding. This track emulates the way a “Snake Charmer” hypnotizes to get what they want but also the release of control.
CLOUDS:
With significant travel in 2023, this track represents the hectic nature of flying. From walking through airports, to take off, to landing, the “Clouds” are a present part of flying.
TRIALS:
At the start of the pandemic everything changed for me. My musical career had a significant blow from playing regular gigs and booking shows to literally nothing. During the pandemic I experienced career difficulties but also significant loss from suicide and family deaths. I also had a forced military move that still impacts my family daily. The “Trials” we face in life are always difficult to navigate but we cannot let them win.
RANGELANDS:
From the wide-open spaces in Wyoming to the landscape of Kyrgyzstan, the “Rangelands” of the world are a peaceful and soulful place to reflect.
THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN:
“This Side of Heaven” is a title for questioning different people's religious behavior. Religion can make people do interesting things from wearing a completely black robe from head to toe in 120-degree heat to decreeing politically skewed messages to naive people in sermons. There is always a different side, which is why the push and release in this track is so meaningful.
